Between June 1926 and February 1929, the couple resided and worked on the 200-acre Thorson family farm in Hesper Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. In February 1929, they sold their livestock and equipment and relocated to Battle Creek, Michigan, where Elmer worked in the packing and shipping department of the United Steel and Wire factory. Their residences in Battle Creek included an apartment on South Place and houses on Fonda Avenue, including 52 Fonda Avenue.

On November 27, 1937, they purchased a home at 807 Jackson Street. In May 1942, they moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Elmer was employed by the General Mills Mechanical Division until 1945.
